Women In Business: Be Proud It's Women's History Month

Posted by Vicki Donlan on Tue, Mar 4, 2014 @ 15:03 PM

For me every day is another day to celebrate women's history as women are involved in every area of life and continue to change the world one woman at a time.

I'm proud to be a woman and have never felt any reason to be anything else but ME! Vicki Donlan

At 62, I am grateful for having the opportunity to be healthy, active, involved and relevant. I love business! I always have and I believe it is because my Dad encouraged me to watch him and learn from his business. I love my family! I am fortunate to have a wonderful husband of 41 years, a successful son and daughter-in-law, and beautiful new granddaughter. Life has taught me to live in the moment and to know that the most precious moments are those that too many people miss because they are living for others. As a woman entrepreneur, I have always wanted to do it my way. I have worked in many industries and always found the only way to work was my way. I've always worked with purpose. In other words, I start each day motivated that my actions will impact others and thereby give purpose to my life.

This is why I love learning about women in history. History provides understanding for how things change and why they develop. Women have always been at the forefront of change, although sometimes it requires great patience and study to explore their stories.

While researching my book HER TURN Why It's Time For Women To Lead in America, I investigated the history of women in medicine, non-profit, the law, education, business and entrepreneurship and more. When they say "behind every man there is a great woman", I learned there have been plenty of men who only soared to success because of the women they worked with.

The stories of women today are just as fascinating and every woman should take the time to learn about women in her industry. Learning history allows one to see that the path is available to be taken if one has the courage and commitment.

Yes, I know many women are tired of hearing about gender bias and gender differences, and they want to believe that women have arrived and can no longer be applauded for being the first this or that. But, I say PLEASE never stop celebrating the successes of women. When one woman wins all women win, and it matters for the next generation ---yes, our daughters and our granddaughters.

I hope if you are reading this blog you'll take the time to comment on a woman who you admire or celebrate. My list is very long, and in no particular order it starts like this:

My Mom, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush, Eleanor Roosevelt, Arianna Huffington, Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Barbara Lee, Ellen Zane etc.

The one thing every woman on this list has in common - conviction -- a strong opinion they are willing to fight for and won't back down from.
