The best time to start a business is in a recession! Most of the women in business I coach started their businesses during the last recession - right after 9/11.
Why? Because when times get tough women, in particular, want more control over their own life. The best way to gain control over your work life is to become your own boss.
So, reason one- you have the ability to take control over the uneasiness you feel about your work life - start or buy a business. Change your feeling of boredom and lack of accomplishment into excitement for running your own shop. If you like the work you are in you can subcontract the work back to your current employer - it's a win-win. If you have been dreaming of launching another idea now's the time to put that dream into action.
Reason two - there is business out there and people are looking for those who bring energy to their work. Take a look at the stories in business magazines or websites such as Inc.; Entrepreneur or Forbes.com/entrepreneurs (to name a few). Every business story is about an energetic entrepreneur using her passion to drive a new idea to market. People love to do business with people who care about the work they do and the people they work with. Women naturally bring these skills to the forefront. Passion, compassion, heart, enthusiasm and cooperation are words that describe today's women entrepreneurs. If these words describe you - entrepreneurship is your calling.
Reason three - this is a great time to bootstrap a business. Historically, women have been successful at containing the costs in the startup phase of business. Often this is the criticism VCs and other financiers have of woman-owned businesses, but in an economic downturn it is bootstrapping that keeps creative entrepreneurs in business. The purpose of running your own business is to do what you love to do, employ others who want to work with you, and create financial independence for you and your family.
