Entrepreneurs struggle every day trying to buy a winning team for their business with a small budget. Women entrerpeneurs are especially challenged with this as the perception is they will not build scalable businesses.

Sabermetrics, defined by its inventor Bill James, is "the search for objective knowledge about baseball." Sabermetrics attempts to answer objective questions about baseball, such as "which player on the Red Sox contributed the most to the team's offense?" or "How many home runs will Ken Griffey hit next year?" It cannot deal with the subjective judgments.

So what does this have to do with business? Everything, if you believe that in order to hire the best talent you have to pay the big bucks being offered in the big leagues. The truth is most small businesses don't have the budget for hiring the so-called proven talent for CEO, COO, CMO, CFO or CTO. More importantly, there are no guarantees that the high-priced talent will deliver for you. Take a look at the recent experience at HP (Hewlett Packard). Eleven months ago Leo Apotheker was named as the company’s new CEO. As the former SAP CEO, Apotheker was brought in to overhaul the company. Unfortunately, HP’s stock has dropped 47 percent on Leo’s watch and now former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is taking over....

Anyway, back to you and your small business....

Hiring the best talent available is critical and talented people are experienced people, with high visibility, and a strong network. These are subjective judgments of looking at talent and they come with a high pricetag . But, if you focus on the objective questions for what you are looking for you can target an undervalued pool of talent that can work within your budget. Depending on the skills you are looking to fill you might seek out leaders of other small businesses in your industry or aligning industries and convince them they are better with you then against you. You might also choose, as Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) does in the movie, to hire several people to complete the job description for one position and get two for the price of one. Job-sharing was proven very successful in the early 2000s and only went away due to employee benefit costs. But with the right combination of talent it can bring faster profitablility and growth to a new company.

Building a successful company means hiring great talent. But you don't have to spend your entire budget on high visibility, recruited talent that won't guarantee you anything. Talent comes at a variety of prices.
