We all know that in life s_ _t happens. Why is it so difficult for us, women entrepreneurs particularly, to understand that in business s_ _t happens also?
As a business coach, I work with entrepreneurs every day to assist them in dealing with the ups and downs of business. There isn't a day that goes by that every entrepreneur isn't challenged by people, prices, or things. The fact is being in business means having to say you're sorry or at least you'll do better next time. Any entrepreneur who believes that (s)he can do otherwise is just fooling her(himself).
Like the blizzard of '78 or now the blizzard of 2013, there are some things in life no matter how much you plan for them it just won't work out as you planned.
These are the times that the control freak entrepreneurs lose all control. With several days notice of a blizzard coming, they hunker down, staff appropriately so as not to have to pay people who won't get any work done anyway or make any sales, and wait out the expected duration of the storm.
Of course, storms never have expectation timelines. No travel on Friday so the roads can be plowed continues into no business on Saturday or Sunday because clean up must take place. But then Monday arrives and all should be perfect with the world. Not so says officials who aren't confident that safety has been restored. Two more days of no school and an erratic work schedule ensue -- is this any way to run a business that wants to be successful? You know the answer - sometimes shit happens and it is out of your control. Relax! You are not all powerful and cannot make the snow and ice go away. You cannot restore power around the region so that you customers can return to their usual routine and start purchasing or using your product and service once more.
You have no choice but to chill! At least for a few days or even a week. Do the best you can do to focus on moving forward when the world gets back to normal and business resumes.
Freaking out for entrepreneurs, and particularly women entrepreneurs, accomplishes nothing but to make matters worse.
This is your time to say whatever prayers will get you through the storm and its aftermath. The Serenity Prayer -
grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Whatever works because nothing you can do will change the situation and only you can control how you react to it.
So, get out and play in the snow. Enjoy your time with friends and family. Play some games and stay warm and be grateful that you have the power to dig your way out of anything you put your mind to. No snow storm or climate change can ever hold back a passionate woman entrepreneur. Tomorrow, or the next day, or even the day after that, you'll pick yourself up and get back to business as usual and realize nothing can stop you from being successful in your business.
