Are you a go it alone kinda gal? Do you like to do your own thing? Do you spend your day at work shaking your head observing how business is done believing in your heart you could do it better?
Well, let me be the first to tell you, you just might have what it takes to be a successful woman entrepreneur. I believe that 2014 will be the year of the woman entrepreneur!
It was the year 2000 when Sara Blakely (pictured here) founded her now billion dollar company, Spanx. Today, Ms. Blakely is the youngest female billionaire on the planet. Why? Because she had an idea for a product that she knew she would purchase if it was available and was daring enough to believe in herself to launch the company to make it happen.
I believe that there are thousands of Saras out there ready, willing and able to do what it takes to start a business, grow a business and make a difference for hundreds of thousands of employees looking for an opportunity to work hard for an entrepreneur with passion.
In other words, you can build it! The American Dream is alive and well and women will prove it this year as they start businesses in record numbers.
Here are the 3 reasons women in business should, and will, consider launching a business of their own:
(1) Studies on working women report that as many as 25% say that they want to work for themselves. The reason most often given was to be more passionate about their work life. Now that the workforce is more than 50% female one would think that there would be some greater advancement with solutions to work/life balance. Believe it or not, the opposite is ture. Many corporations have pulled back from offering better working conditions due to costs.
(2) Educated women will work longer than at any time during our history and therefore can make more money working for themselves. Corporate benefits may look good on paper, but the fact is women have greater opportunities if they spend their time building something of their own. Women are more highly educated that at any other time in our history and still aren't seeing the benefits working for others. Being in business for yourself means you create your own paycheck and have an opportunity to build something of value that someday can be sold.
(3) Job security is never a question when you are the boss! Regardless of women's education, long time on the job or loyalty to the top, advancement to the executive level still requires movement from one company to another. Some of the most powerful women in America have lost a job due to corporate mismanagement. When you become an entrepreneur you determine the future.
Becoming an entrepreneur is clearly not for every woman in business, but there are fabulous role models to follow. Take a moment to read the Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs of 2013.
Now ask yourself: Do you have what it takes to be your own boss?
Do you have the passion required to work long hours in creating the work you love to do that can be a business (not just a hobby)? A hobby is doing something you love with your time, but not having the skills to create a profit from doing it. A business generates a profit which means when you add up the costs of your time, all materials, and all the costs of selling it to a customer there is something left over (the profit).
Are you willing to work longer hours for a business of your own that needs constant nurturing to grow and succeed?
Are you willing to value yourself and your time greater than ever before?
A woman entrepreneur is only as successful as she values herself. Make 2014 the year when you create the work you love and enjoy the freedom of designing your own destiny.
