Women in Business and Women Entrepreneurs Get Tough!

Dear Blog Readers: So where have I been? Perhaps you thought I ran out of material for my blogs....never! Perhaps you thought I decided to pursue better paying gigs...never! Perhaps you thought women in business and women entrepreneurs were no longer my passion....oh, you of little faith...never. I have, unfortunately been stricken with a broken wing! http://talefromthecoopkeeper.blogspot.com/2011/05/take-this-broken-wing.html

Aah, the pain of not being able to type and tell you what I am thinking. As I scratch out this blog with one hand (left hand) damn, I'm right-handed; I realized I was just like many of my clients...working with one hand tied behind my back. Let me explain.

When a woman in business or a woman entrepreneur decides to take the next step in her career she is first met with all the reasons she can't move forward...aka a broken wing. She is led to believe that she has flaws or faults that make her less than able to complete the task she seeks.

The question I would ask her is "Why do you listen to the naysayers that tell you you can't do _____?" Everyone on this planet has something that can hold them back from being all that they can be, but some make it to the top anyway. The question each of us must ask ourselves is what is it that makes some keep moving forward, broken wing and all, and others sit back and rest while the competition takes control?

Let me give you an example of what I call "moxie" for women in business and women entrepreneurs. First, a woman entrepreneur I know decided she just didn't care that the bank she was working with wouldn't loan her the cash she needed to expand. Without cash to expand her business she was wounded and couldn't move forward. She started networking with people who took her seriously and she landed a $100,000 loan to build her business. Within a year and a half she was able to pay back her financier handsomely and move her company forward. She may actually have paid her funder more than a bank would have required, but the thrill of making the payment catapulted her to greater heights. (A word to banks that aren't willing to spend time learning a woman's business - she is asking you to believe in her. She is asking you to trust her. And, in the words of Jerry Seinfeld, the prospects for her business are spectacular!"

In the case of the woman in business who was looking to climb her way to the top of the corporate ladder in her business, she went straight to the CEO and co-founder and let him know that she was serious about being a part of the executive team, of which, at the time, there were no women. The CEO in question realized that it was now or never that he made the decision to create a level playing field at his company and advance a woman to the executive team. Yes, she made it because she put herself out there and made her case. No broken wing for this gal. She proved that being an assertive female took 'leaning in' to a new level and she found her way to the top.

The moral of the story, as I see it, is that women everywhere find themselves too often with the 'broken wing syndrome' and make the mistake of holding back when they should be pushing forward.

Personally I learned, this month, that I can do anything I want one-handed or two-handed, and I can't let a little pain or inconvenience get in the way. My message for women everywhere is to pursue your dreams and your vision regardless of what seems to be standing in your way. If you believe in something you MUST put yourself in the position to achieve it as there is a world of women watching from the sidelines of your progress. We are all in this together. Let's get tough and make the path for the next generation of women just a little easier.
