Women Entrepreneurs Must Blog

Posted by Vicki Donlan on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 @ 07:02 AM

The marketing world has changed dramatically. No longer can an entrepreneur "build it and expect them to come." Of course, that concept was never really true. Once it (product or service) was built it needed to be promoted to the decided target market through advertising vehicles such as print ads, billboards, radio, marketing brochures, flyers, free handouts or demos and more.

Welcome Social Media and Blogging! women entrepreneur thought leaders

Entrepreneurs today must become thought leaders in their prospective fields. If you started a business you must know everything about it and why the market should select you to do business with. Women entrepreneurs, particularly, must find their voice through blogging their expertise. Interestingly enough, women are the majority of Facebook users and have taken social media by storm.

Aileen Lee, partner at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers says, Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, has talked about how women are not only the majority of its users, but drive 62% of activity in terms of messages, updates and comments, and 71% of the daily fan activity. Women have 8% more Facebook friends on average than men, and spend more time on the site. According to an early Facebook team member, women played a key role in the early days by adopting three core activities—posting to walls, adding photos and joining groups—at a much higher rate than males.

It's time for women entrepreneurs to become the premier thought leaders on the web. It may be 2012, but women are still finding their voice in many business fields. I've spent my business career providing a voice for women in business through launching a newspaper profiling women in business and making sure only women could contribute to its content. I wrote and published a book, HER TURN Why It's Time For Women To Lead In America, in 2007 to raise the profile of women in business, small business, politics, science, health care, education, law and nonprofit and share why their contributions are changing America for the better.

As I coach my clients (mostly women entrepreneurs) to blog about what they know I get a push back that they don't have time, don't have anything to say, or don't want to sound egotistical. If you want to be an entrepreneur you better have a strong ego! If you don't believe in your ability to succeed no one else will either. Prospects today have many options of where to spend their money. If you can't convince them that choosing you is in their best interest -- they will go elsewhere.

Start today....take a moment to think about something a current customer has asked you about your service or product or industry. Begin writing your blog. Google the subject and add more content from other thought leaders on the web that agree with your ideas. Make sure to link to the article and to your own website with the keywords in your blog.

Congratulations...you are now a blogger...and more important, a thought leader!

We need more women thought leaders and I look forward to reading your blogs......email to vicki@vickidonlan.com
