Women Entrepreneurs: What Do You Do?

Women entrepreneurs, particularly, often find it difficult to say exactly what they do. Perhaps it is because we spend so much time being all things to all the people in our lives. The problem, however, becomes critical in our business life.

When given the opportunity to tell a prospect what you do, are you able to clearly define what you do? Women wearing hats resized 600

Yes, women wear many hats in business and in their personal lives, but in business we must be able to clearly define what we do. Remember sell benefits NOT features. A prospective customer/client cares only about what you might be able to do for them (benefits)- not how multi-talented you are (features).

As a woman small business owner you must quickly and clearly be able to tell every one you meet what you do that benefits them. For example, "I sell real estate" -or - "I sell homes and property to those looking to live in Suffolk County." Specifics are important. Or, "I'm in investments" or "I help clients protect their financial future by creating a budget for their money."

Using words that other people use helps define what you can do for them. Everyone has money. Not everyone has investments.

Another example is: "I own a marketing company." Better is, "I spread the word for small business owners, like yourself, and make sure they get the visibility they need to grow their business."

Simple changes in how you say what you do is important for women entrepreneurs. Like most of us you are also: boss, janitor, sales, marketer, networker, receptionist, bookkeeper, proofreader, decisionmaker, go-for, banker, time manager, opener, closer, chief dish and bottle washer, daughter, significant other, and much more to so many others.

Take time today to sit down and clearly define (and write down) what it is you do in your business. Call up a friend, associate, prospect or customer and make sure (s)he understands it clearly too. Now, take your new description out for a road trip and watch the difference defining what you do will have on your business.

When people know that what you do will benefit them you will increase your customer base.
