The big question with women's businesses today is what do women entrepreneurs want? Besides the obvious -- women want to be taken seriously! Women want to succeed! Women want to live the American dream! Women want to be all that they can be! Women want what men want -- gender in business has no boundaries! We all want to believe that all things are possible ----and I can tell you they are! All things are possible regardless of your gender -- BUT - without a plan NOTHING is possible... so what's in your plan?
In my experience, women want to create a business that provides personal satisfaction as well as professional satisfaction. It is not always easy to do this and still develop a company with value. Creating a company that emotionally provides a feeling of satisfaction does not guarantee a business that has value to a broader marketplace.
The opposite is also true -- designing a company that's only purpose is to drive revenues rarely satisfies the emotional need to have a greater impact on the world. Most often a balance of these two separate desires needs to be pursued to satisfy the need to be part of a bigger mission.
It is a myth, however, to believe that men instinctively know how to do this. Although men are often more likely to strive for the 'almighty dollar', there are plenty of women in business who are laser focused on driving revenues and earnings.
As a business coach, I recommend to all my clients that they have clear and visible goals for monthly revenue and personal satisfaction.
For example:
Stop what you are doing right now and write down how much revenue you WANT to put on your bottom line in September 2012. Now create a picture at least 8 1/2 x 11 with that dollar amount and copy it enough times so you can put it up in your office, in your bathroom and/or dressing room, and in each office of those in your business whose work effects the bottom line. Have an office meeting informing your staff that from now on the business has monthly goals and you are interested in getting input from everyone on the best way to make these goals a reality. Engaging others in your plan increases your ability to reach your objective. Without a goal you really don't know what you are working for. Without a plan you have no way of meeting your goal ----it is really that simple.
But, as I said earlier in this blog, I know well from many of my small business clients that money is not their only mission. Paying it forward, doing well by doing good, giving back to their community, their country, and the world is a driving force in the reason they get up every morning and positively take on the day. These goals, too, need to be planned if the mission is to be accomplished.
A visible reminder for you, your team and all those you encounter on a daily basis of what your charitable goals are goes a long way to make sure they are part of the plan.
Women understand best the adage, 'It takes a village'. We know that when we engage our friends, family, peers, business associates and community in our mission to do good we can accomplish anything and embrace the personal satisfaction that comes from having a purpose.
I spend my time helping my clients develop business plans, exit strategies, marketing plans, and monthly revenue goals for their businesses. I know that with a plan every woman in business can achieve her own meaning of success. Without a plan --- you'll never know when it's too late to turn the ship around and need to swim to shore.
Start planning today and create goals that will enrich your life: personally, professionally, physicially and spirituality.
Finally, you will only get from your life what you plan for.......
